As business owners, we make plans, set goals and priorities, and then work with all our heart on to achieve them, but sometimes when you least expect it, you have to reassess. This past week I have spent a lot of time thinking about the different areas of my business, what I want to grow, what I want to cut back, and what is just taking up resources - basically, I had to call an audible and change some of my plans as I am at the intersection of obligation and opportunity in more ways than one.
As a result, I am going to be adding a bit more of a personal touch to this site. I will be sharing my weekly goals, challenges and other issues relevant to my business. Things won’t really change all that much, but I will be dealing with a few more topics.
Monday Motivation is a series that Wendy at eMoms at Home and I (at my personal site Casual Keystrokes ) have been doing for the past year. By putting our weekly goals in writing and holding ourselves accountable, we have found it easier to stay on track and move towards our bigger goals.
So how do you get involved?
- Step 1 - let us know what you are going to get done today (your to-do list, so to speak).
- Step 2 - put it in a comment below or a post on your own site.
- Step 3 - let us know what will motivate you to get it done - a reward, consequences, or whatever you need to think that will ensure you do what you say you are going to do.
- We don’t care how you get it done, we just want to support you in reaching your goals.
This week my kids are home on Spring Break and while I will make plans, chances are I may have to call an audible (sorry, I borrowed that from The Game Plan movie), especially if we decide to take a day trip or two. This is one of the benefits of working for yourself - its a lot easier to change directions on the fly if you have to.
My goals for the week are:
- Finish cleaning my office (this was a goal last week and I didn’t finish it, which means Ahmed gets some free advertising)
- Go through my sites and update all plugins to their new versions and add a few new plugins where needed
- Complete all 23 client update tasks that are in my inbox as of today
- Finish client site design
- Do as much future posting as I can for some of my niche sites
I don’t think I can give away free advertising for the third week in a row, so if I don’t get all of this done, one lucky commenter will get a one hour phone consultation from me - to ask about blogging, web design, ideas on how to improve your site, or anything else web related you may have questions on.
So, what are you going to get done?

24. March 2008 | 11:33 hCall an audible? Not an expression I’m familiar with (no, I haven’t seen the movie) but we’re on Easter holidays here too (for two weeks!), which makes fitting everything in tricky … so I think I understand!
Plus your to-do list looks a bit like mine. I need to:
finish two client site designs
write some posts (I’d love to be far enough ahead to be able to future-post!)
update WordPress on several blogs (when is that next release coming out?)
And if I ever get time, I’d really like to update the design of my own sites …
Motivation? If I don’t get these done (not the last, I know that isn’t going to happen!) I’ll go to the gym four times next week. Because I ought to do that too …

24. March 2008 | 15:46 hThis is a big day for me, it’s a bank holiday here in the UK, so I’m off work and I have had a good few things to do. My to do list has 11 items on it now and I’m already through 5 of them. Taking time out to read my feeds at the moment, but I’m off to do number 6 straight after this comment!
Good luck with your tasks! I’ll be back to let you know I’ve done mine!
