Three Keys To Unleash The Power Of Forums

By Char

keysA very common misconception about forums (or discussion boards) is that all you need to do is join one, throw a few links in your signature and poof, you will generate loads of new traffic for your sites. Very wrong! The purpose behind forums is to connect individuals with like interests or goals and to provide a network for these individuals to share information.

Key #1 – Find Your Niche.

If you run a website that sells upscale coffee, then seek out a forum for coffee lovers. There are forums for every interest group and each forum has its own personality. It may take you a few tries to find a forum that will match your personality and goals, but there is one out there. Once you find a forum you think is a good match, take time to introduce yourself formally. Don’t just start making posts that beg people to visit your sites.

Key #2 – Share Your Knowledge.

In order to receive the benefits of a forum, you have to be willing to GIVE BEFORE you receive. Share your tips, ideas, support for others and knowledge freely. You’d be amazed at how much more you will get out of the forum this way.

Key #3 – Develop Relationships.

Like blogging, you need to start and continue conversations. Get to know the members of the forum by adding to the threads that have been started.

Over time you will find your traffic will increase, because people are truly interested in your site and respect what you have to say. You may also find additional benefits such as project opportunities, new clients and even some new friends along the way.

[...] There is always something to learn here with Char. I was reading about her post on the power of forums and I couldn’t agree more with her that joining forums (or discussion boards) is not about attaching your signature and generating more traffic to your sites. The attitude towards forums should be to “connect with individuals with like interests or goals”. Joining a forum is a wonderful way to build relationships and learn from one another. It is to share your experience and help others too. Quoting what Char has pointed out, you should take time to find a forum of your passion and interest, and it may take some time before you find the right one. [...]

I couldn’t agree with you more regarding building relationships and seeking out a forum that feeds your passion and attracts like-minded people. Not every one you visit or join is going to be the right fit for you. I have a forum for moms and moms-to-be @ so I know that sometimes people join and stay for life and other people just never really fit in there.
