I think that keeping it clean and less cluttered helps the eyes and the user is able to navigate freely without feeling overwhelmed. Great info there! Having said that, Smashing Magazine (mentioned in your post and one of my personal favourites) has some really popular lists of 100 or more (wordpress themes for instance), and this still works.
