I agree 95% of the time a short list is best - maybe about 10. Only if you are aiming at a comprehensive list of some sort does a long list make sense. Occasionally such lists are useful.

Every time I come across a loooong list I feel frustrated! I think that keeping it clean and less cluttered helps the eyes and the user is able to navigate freely without feeling overwhelmed. Great info there!

Keeping lists short and simple would definitely be a rule of thumb for me. Having said that, Smashing Magazine (mentioned in your post and one of my personal favourites) has some really popular lists of 100 or more (wordpress themes for instance), and this still works.

I think it depends on what the list is about.

For something visual like themes, I prefer a long list as I tend to rule in or out a theme in about a nanosecond (who doesn't?). For more complicated and wordy things though, like technical tips, a long list is too tiring and best kept under 10.

As a reader (and blogger) long lists are a turn off for me, don't even start reading them. I think short lists are the way to go.
